We're in Ashland, Oregon, home of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival for the past 80 years! The festival has progressed from a Shakespeare play shown over Independence holiday to showing ten different plays throughout the season (Feb - Nov). Today, Paul's brother treated us to a Back Stage Tour.
To give you some background, I was in one high school play and have always been interested in theatre, movies, stories, etc. Recently Paul and I had season tickets to the Broadway series of plays for two years and really enjoyed it.
Here, there are three theatres (one outside) and one to two plays a day at the theatres. Ten plays involves a lot of actors, costume and set designers. That involves a lot of set and costume changers. There are about 4 to 5 people working for each actor in the Festival. This is a full-time business for these people and this community.
Our tour showed us the theatre and how most everything is movable and changeable. It showed us the back stage, the above stage, the below stage... you get the drift. We were both very impressed by all the work that is involved in making each play something we can thoroughly enjoy.
We were only allowed to take photos at the outside theatre and it just so happened to be getting set up for the play we will see tonight, "Head Over Heels."
Since there are no photos allowed tonight, just know that tonight I will be feeling like a true pioneer sitting in an outside Elizabethean looking theatre. Go break a leg!
After the tour we drove up to Medford and here's a high speed scene of the Valley. Just had to get another photo of an old barn.
In Medford, we killed some time at the Farmer's Market while waiting for Paul's sister-in-law to fly in from New York City where they live full-time.
Stopped at the original Harry & David's for a little browsing and shopping. Now out to dinner and the theatre!
