We had visited the Portland Head Light (House) before when it was sunny, and so I really did want to get some different photos in the fog and rain. I was not disappointed. But before I show some of my 90 photos that I took there, I will explain the rest of the day.
After lunch at Gilbert's (Famous) Chowder House in downtown Portland, we drove to the closest Best Buy and couldn't find a parking place.....everybody goes to the mall when it rains! Got a battery, charger and more memory disks with the help of some very professional staff. After that, we took the scenic route US 1 to Bath and planned to go to Maine Maritime Marine Museum, but the timing did not allow us to take full advantage of the place. So we decided to delay that visit and hopefully catch it on Friday, when we head to NYC.
Next planned stop was to be the Penobscott Bay area and it's waterfront towns. But we got stuck in stop-and-go traffic going into Wiscasset ("The Prettiest Town in Maine). Decided to take a different route up to Ellsworth, ME (where we would spend the night) via 27 and the interstate highways. Took another wrong turn and ended up going about 10 miles out of way to get on interstate. Ugh! Getting downright frustrated. Once on the interstate freeway going 70 miles an hour, had to watch for "Moose on Roadway Next 10 miles" several times! No sighting of moose on road or otherwise. Thank goodness!
In spite of delays, we are in our hotel and had another fine meal, this time at an Irish pub. Without further delay.....here's photos from the famous Portland lighthouses. It was raining when we got there, then it stopped and the fog came rolling in. Lighthouses are pretty to look at in the sunshine, but their greatest value is on days like today. The light was flashing out to sea and the fog horn was blowing.
In the above photo to the right of the main lighthouse and out to sea is another lighthouse, this photo is a zoom of that lighthouse.
Fog came rolling in and the lighthouse takes on a soft glow.
This a the Spider Point Lighthouse in the fog.
